TV stand Lagos: Space for Everything

Bright sage-green living room with a wall-mounted television and pale-wood media console.

TL;DR: Choose a TV stand for a Lagos home by checking the television's actual support footprint, equipment clearances and cable access before deciding how wide or decorative the cabinet should be.

Key takeaways

  • A screen-size label is not a cabinet specification: use the television's model-specific dimensions, stand footprint and installation instructions.
  • Check the cabinet's stated load capacity against the equipment you intend to place on it.
  • Do not cover television ventilation openings; Sony's support guidance says confined installations need proper ventilation and directs owners to their model manual.
  • Measure media equipment with plugs and cables connected, not just its bare casing.
  • Approve storage access, installation responsibilities and delivery arrangements alongside the finish.

How wide should a TV stand be?

A TV stand must accommodate the television's actual support arrangement and the equipment layout, rather than a screen diagonal alone. Begin with the exact TV model, its overall width, its feet or central stand, and its manufacturer's installation instructions.

Our design preference is to compare the cabinet and screen as a complete wall composition after those functional checks. A broad cabinet may balance a large blank wall beautifully, but visual balance does not establish load capacity or make unsupported TV feet acceptable.

Ask the furniture supplier to confirm the top's load rating and any restrictions on where equipment can sit. For a wall-mounted screen, have the installer confirm the wall, fixing method and equipment requirements separately. The cabinet below does not become a television bracket by standing nearby.

For a Lagos living room, photograph the actual wall with sockets, doors and nearby windows visible. This gives a designer more useful context than a cropped inspiration image from a completely different home.

What belongs in the equipment schedule?

The equipment schedule should list every device that needs storage, power, ventilation or a signal connection. Include the decoder, streaming device, games console, amplifier and soundbar only where they are part of your actual setup.

For each device, record:

  • Exact model and casing dimensions.
  • Space occupied by connected plugs and leads.
  • Manufacturer-required ventilation clearances.
  • How the controls and remote operate.
  • Whether you need frequent access to change a disc, cable or setting.

Our recommendation is to review this schedule before choosing shelf heights. A large exterior cabinet can still contain a compartment that is wrong for the device. Closed doors are a visual choice, not proof that remotes, wireless signals or cooling will work through them.

If your Lagos brief includes a decoder and games console, show both to the designer instead of asking vaguely for space for electronics. The cabinet should accommodate the household you have, not the unusually minimal household in the render.

Why does ventilation matter?

Ventilation matters because equipment installation instructions can require openings and clear space that a decorative enclosure would otherwise block. Sony's television ventilation guidance says ventilation slots must not be blocked or covered and warns against confined spaces without proper ventilation.

That guidance is television-specific, not a universal clearance rule for every decoder, amplifier or console. Use the manual for each actual model. Do not borrow one brand's general gap and apply it to all the equipment inside the cabinet.

Ask the designer to show the proposed ventilation provision in the drawing. A cable hole should not simply be assumed to satisfy an equipment manufacturer's ventilation requirements. If active cooling or electrical work is proposed, have the relevant specialist confirm the design and responsibility.

How do you hide cables without losing access?

Hide cables with planned routes and accessible connections, not by sealing everything permanently behind the cabinet. Start by marking sockets and signal points, then show where leads enter each compartment.

Our preference is to leave a clear way to replace a cable or remove a device without damaging the finish. Ask whether back panels are removable, whether shelves can be taken out and how plugs pass through the proposed openings.

For a floating console, request a fixing assessment and a written installation scope. Do not assume that a visually slim cabinet, television wall mounting and moving electrical outlets are all included in a furniture quotation.

How should it work with the seating?

The TV stand should be assessed from the seats people actually use and with its doors or drawers open. Tape out its floor footprint and compare the remaining route past the sofa and coffee table.

Check whether an open drawer intrudes into that route, whether the screen remains visible from the intended seats and whether the soundbar has an agreed position. Treat viewing comfort as something to test with the actual room and equipment, not as a guaranteed result of buying a particular cabinet height.

If the sofa is also changing, use the FCI Nigeria sofa depth guide to coordinate both decisions before finalising the media wall.

Limitations

This article is a buying and briefing framework, not a structural, electrical or audiovisual installation specification. It does not establish stock, prices, delivery dates or a universal ventilation gap. Model manuals, cabinet specifications and a site assessment take precedence over styling advice.

For a useful proposal, contact FCI Nigeria with your wall measurements, equipment list and room photographs. Ask for the storage drawing and installation exclusions alongside the finish sample.
