TL;DR: Choose sofa cushion filling by its complete construction, how it feels when you sit and the care it needs, not by treating a foam-density number or the word feather as a quality verdict.
Key takeaways
- Foam density and firmness are different properties: the Polyurethane Foam Association says high-density foam can be soft and low-density foam can be firm.
- A cushion can combine materials: Sofas & Stuff describes its 3F interiors as a foam core with fibre and a feather layer.
- Feather-containing cushions can involve regular plumping and rotation; follow the instructions for the actual cushion, not a generic internet routine.
- Specify seat cushions and back cushions separately rather than assuming the whole sofa uses one filling.
- For a Lagos order, ask who can supply a replacement insert and what information they need to identify it.
What does sofa cushion filling actually describe?
It describes the materials inside the cushion, but a useful specification also explains how those materials are arranged. A label such as foam and feather is only the start of the description.
For example, Sofas & Stuff's published 3F construction uses a foam core, a fibre layer and duck feathers arranged in channels. The company says the core provides a firmer foundation and the feather layer adds softness. That describes its own cushion, not every product with similar words on the label.
Our recommendation is to request the construction of the seat and back cushions separately. Ask whether there is a core, what surrounds it, how loose material is contained and whether the insert can be removed.

This turns a vague comfort preference into a useful buying conversation. It also avoids discovering that the impressive filling description referred only to the scatter cushions.
Does higher-density foam mean a firmer sofa?
No, foam density does not tell you firmness on its own. The Polyurethane Foam Association's performance guide defines density as mass per unit volume and explicitly says firmness is independent of density.
The association describes firmness using indentation force deflection, abbreviated to IFD: the force required to compress a foam sample by a specified amount. Density answers a different question about the material, so a density figure cannot substitute for a firmness specification or an actual sit test.
The same guide says higher polymer density typically helps foam retain its original properties. It also distinguishes polymer density from a figure affected by fillers or reinforcements. This is material-level guidance, not a lifespan promise for a finished sofa.
Our buying rule is to ask what the number represents and how it relates to the selected cushion. Do not impose a universal minimum density on every sofa without considering its construction, intended use and manufacturer's specification.
One large number can look wonderfully decisive on a sales card. The cushion has not agreed to be that simple.
Is feather filling better than foam?
Neither label is a universal winner because a sofa may combine them and the preferred feel is personal. Compare the actual construction and the maintenance involved, rather than ranking raw ingredients.
Sofas & Stuff's 3F guide is a useful example of a hybrid. It describes a firmer foam foundation with a softer feather layer and says feather-containing interiors benefit from regular plumping and rotation.

Our judgement is to start with the look and care routine you want to live with. If you prefer a consistently tidy silhouette, ask the supplier to demonstrate what the cushion looks like after sitting and after the recommended redressing. If you like a relaxed appearance, check that the level of maintenance still suits the household.
Do not turn either preference into a health claim. This guide does not establish that a filling treats back pain, improves posture or is suitable for someone with a particular medical condition.
How should you compare cushions before ordering?
Compare complete seats in a consistent way, and record the differences that matter to you. A loose material sample is useful for understanding construction but is not a complete sofa.
Our proposed comparison method is to sit in your normal position, then try the other positions you genuinely use. Notice the initial feel, how far you settle, the back support you prefer and how easily you get out. These are personal observations, not laboratory measurements.
Ask whether the display sofa has the same cushion option as the quote. Record any difference, along with whether the sample is new or has been used in the showroom. If you are ordering for Lagos while abroad, request a written comparison of the exact options rather than accepting similar as a specification.
Keep geometry separate from filling. Our sofa seat-depth guide explains the separate layout and fit questions. Changing a cushion description does not tell you whether the sofa's dimensions suit your preferred sitting position.
What maintenance should you confirm for a Lagos home?
Confirm the care instructions for the cover and the inner cushion separately, including what is not permitted. A removable cover is not evidence that the entire cushion can be washed.
For its own 3F interiors, Sofas & Stuff advises against washing the cushions and recommends specialist help when deeper cleaning is needed. It also describes plumping and rotation. Do not apply its detailed routine to an unrelated filling without the relevant manufacturer's approval.

Our local-market recommendation is to make the care plan practical for the person who will actually maintain the Lagos home. Ask the supplier to explain the routine, permitted cleaning method and whom to contact after a spill. Keep those instructions with the order record.
Do not buy a supposedly maintenance-free filling on the strength of the phrase alone. Ask what tasks that promise excludes, and whether the promise applies to the cover, insert or whole sofa.
What should the cushion specification include?
It should identify the ordered construction clearly enough for both initial delivery and a later service enquiry. This is our suggested buyer's record, not a claim that every supplier offers every option.
| Item to record | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Seat construction | What is the core and what surrounds it? |
| Back construction | Is it different from the seat filling? |
| Foam information | What density and firmness information is available, and what do the figures describe? |
| Care | What plumping, rotation or cleaning instructions apply? |
| Insert access | Is the insert removable, and can it be replaced separately? |
| Identification | What model, size and cushion-option reference identifies the order? |
| After-sales route | Who handles the enquiry from Lagos, and what is included in the written terms? |
FCI Nigeria's current procurement page describes helping clients in Lagos and Abuja source luxury furniture. It does not establish that every cushion insert is stocked locally or that a future replacement is guaranteed.
Our recommendation is to settle replacement availability, ordering arrangements and relevant charges before you rely on them. Keeping the model and filling references is more useful than expecting a future supplier to identify the interior from a photograph of the sofa.
Limitations
This article is a materials and purchasing guide, not a laboratory comparison of sofas. The Polyurethane Foam Association is an industry technical source; Sofas & Stuff's care guidance applies to its own described cushion construction.
No universal lifespan, firmness preference, climate performance or health benefit is established here. Generated images are editorial illustrations, not actual FCI sofas, stocked replacement parts or independently tested cushion cross-sections.

What should you send FCI Nigeria?
Send the shortlisted sofa, your preferred sitting feel and the amount of routine cushion care you are willing to do. Start with the FCI Nigeria sofa collection, then ask which filling options apply to the specific model.
When you contact FCI Nigeria, request the seat and back construction, care instructions and replacement-insert arrangements in writing. The aim is not the most impressive ingredient list. It is a sofa specification you understand before it reaches your home.
