TL;DR: Choose an armchair in Lagos by testing the seat with its intended user, checking the complete floor footprint and agreeing upholstery care before placing an order.
Key takeaways
- Overall chair dimensions do not tell you whether the seat supports the way you want to sit.
- Test the chair together with the side table, lamp and any footstool it will use.
- Removable upholstery is a model-specific feature: Poliform's Le Club has a non-removable fabric or leather cover.
- Confirm the delivered configuration and route into the room before approving a large chair.
What will your armchair actually do?
Choose the main use first: reading, conversation, occasional seating or relaxed lounging. A chair selected for one purpose should not be assumed to perform every other role equally well.
For a Lagos living room being furnished around an existing sofa, our starting point would be the missing activity. Does someone need a separate reading seat? Is there a gap in the conversation layout? Or is the proposed chair simply filling an empty corner?
Write down who will use it, for what and for how long. This is our recommended buying method, not a claim that all Lagos households use their rooms in the same way.

A statement chair is allowed to make a statement. Ideally, it should also allow someone to sit down without negotiating with the cushions.
How should you test the seat?
Test the seat in the posture and clothing you would normally use at home, with the back cushion and footstool you intend to order. A brief perch on the front edge cannot answer the same questions as settling into the chair.
Check whether you can reach the back comfortably, rest your arms where you want them and get up in the way you normally would. If it is a reading chair, try holding an actual book rather than adopting a showroom pose.
Record the configuration you tried. A different cushion, upholstery or base can mean you are no longer comparing exactly the same specification. Ask the supplier to explain the differences rather than assuming a family resemblance establishes an identical sitting experience.
Where someone has particular movement, support or accessibility needs, seek an assessment appropriate to that individual. This article does not establish ergonomic or therapeutic suitability.
How much room does an armchair need?
Allow for the complete chair and the activities around it, not just the space occupied by its front legs. Mark the outer dimensions and then add the real positions of the side table, lamp and footstool.

Our recommendation is to test the arrangement while the room is being used. Can someone pass behind the chair? Can the person sitting reach their drink without stretching across an arm? Does a nearby cupboard still open?
If the selected chair swivels or reclines, request its moving envelope and test that too. Do not transfer a clearance figure from a different model merely because both are called armchairs.
For a flat or house in Lagos, measure the actual entry route, including doors, turns and any lift that delivery will use. Ask whether the chair arrives assembled and whether any parts can be removed under the manufacturer's instructions.
Is fabric or leather the better choice?
Neither fabric nor leather is automatically the better choice; compare the exact cover's feel, care instructions and construction. Treat the upholstery specification as part of the purchase rather than a colour decision at the end.
For example, Poliform states that Le Club's fabric or leather upholstery is not removable. The useful lesson is to ask the cover question model by model, not to assume that an upholstered chair has washable covers.
Request the approved cleaning instructions and discuss the ordinary use the chair will receive. If a replacement cover or repair matters to your decision, ask what can actually be supplied and under what terms. Do not interpret “premium” as a maintenance method.

Our fabric sofa buying guide provides related questions about upholstery specifications. Apply the same discipline to an armchair while keeping its particular construction separate.
Should the armchair match the sofa?
The armchair does not have to match the sofa, but it should belong to a deliberate room scheme. We would compare scale, visual weight, material and seat position before insisting on identical upholstery.
A compact chair beside a substantial sofa can work as a contrast, provided the person using it has the seat they need. Conversely, a large accent chair may need a simpler side table or fewer surrounding objects to keep the layout workable.
Bring material samples together in the room. Agree the actual fabric and finish references rather than relying on names such as cream, walnut or bronze, which are not precise specifications.
Limitations
This guide offers purchasing judgement, not a seating assessment, measured survey or confirmation of local stock. A manufacturer's example does not establish availability, price, lead time or suitability for a particular person. Images are illustrative concepts, not a catalogue of products supplied by FCI Nigeria.
What should you send with an enquiry?
Send room photographs, a measured plan, the main use and any upholstery requirements to FCI Nigeria. Its current service description includes furniture and interior design, but the scope for your order should be agreed explicitly.

Use the contact page to request a shortlist with complete dimensions, cover information and delivery requirements. A useful proposal should explain why the chair fits your brief, not simply why it looks excellent on its own.
