Rug Lagos: Size Before Pattern

TL;DR: Choose a rug for your Lagos home by testing its relationship to the furniture and daily movement first, then compare pattern, texture and care requirements.

Key takeaways

  • Living-room rug placement should relate to the whole seating group, not only the coffee table. IKEA placement guidance
  • Dining-room sizing must allow chairs to move out without catching the rug edge. Source
  • Compare the exact rug's care instructions and construction, not a material name alone.
  • A room plan and furniture dimensions make a better selection brief than a cropped inspiration photograph.

What size rug works beneath a sofa?

Choose a rug size that connects the seating arrangement rather than leaving a small island under the coffee table. IKEA's guide recommends a rug longer than the sofa and placing the sofa fully or partly on it, with the wider seating group also considered. This is general retailer guidance, not a compulsory rule for every room. Source

Our recommendation is to compare two deliberate arrangements: furniture fully on the rug, or a consistent partial placement across the main seats. Place the actual furniture dimensions on a plan, including armchairs and a chaise if present. A rug that looks large in isolation can still fail to connect the group.

For a Lagos sitting room used both for family evenings and entertaining, draw the route into the room as well as the seating outline. Do not buy additional rug width just to fill a photograph if it creates an awkward edge across that route.

How can you test the size before ordering?

Mock up the proposed rug boundary in the actual room before committing. Use loose markers or another floor-compatible method rather than adhesive that might damage the surface.

Stand at the doorway, sit in the main seats and move between the furniture. Our design judgement is to look for a coherent seating zone, enough exposed floor where it matters and no accidental-looking edge beneath a chair.

Then test the coffee table. Our coffee-table scale guide is useful companion reading because the table and rug should be considered together, not selected as unrelated centrepieces.

A pattern can be delightful. It cannot renegotiate the position of your sofa legs.

Does a dining rug need a different test?

Yes, a dining rug needs to accommodate chairs in use, not merely chairs tucked against the table. IKEA advises allowing enough rug beyond the table for chairs to pull out without catching the edge and recommends a flatwoven rug for easier chair movement and cleaning under the dining table. Dining guidance

Our preference is to test the exact chair rather than adopt a standard allowance blindly. Pull it back to a realistic sitting and standing position. Check every seat, including the ends, and account for an extending table if one is proposed.

If the room cannot accommodate a useful rug boundary without compromising movement, omitting the dining rug is a legitimate design choice. A room does not owe the mood board an apology.

Which material is best for a Lagos home?

There is no single best material for every Lagos room. Our recommendation is to choose against use: how often people eat there, whether the rug sits near an entrance, how it will be cleaned and whether the room is indoors or exposed outdoors.

Ask for the exact fibre composition, construction, backing, pile description and written care instructions. Request clarity about cleaning methods, underlay compatibility and whether the sample represents the delivered colour and texture. We would favour a sample that works in the room over a persuasive label such as premium or easy-care.

For a covered terrace, do not assume an indoor rug is suitable simply because rain rarely reaches that particular corner. IKEA's guide distinguishes rugs made for outdoor use from indoor choices. Source

What if the furniture moves or opens?

Test the rug with the furniture in its working position. That means dining chairs pulled back, storage accessible and any sofa bed opened.

Read our sofa-bed open-size guide if the room doubles as sleeping space. Our practical view is that a stable everyday arrangement is more useful than one requiring the rug to be moved for each change of use.

Limitations

This is a selection framework, not a specification for a particular rug or a claim about Lagos prices, stock or climate performance. Retailer guidance is general and does not certify an FCI product. Confirm dimensions, care and floor compatibility with the proposed supplier. Images are generated concepts, not photographs of available FCI rugs.

What should you include in your design brief?

Include the room dimensions, furniture sizes, photographs, intended activities and two preferred colour directions. Ask the team to compare the rug with the seating and floor finish in the same scheme.
